Who Are You Matters

My whole life I've lived in the same house in Oakland, California. I've always had a lot of pride in saying that I've been born and raised in Oakland, an ultra-diverse city in one of the most beautiful and desired locations in the world, the Bay Area. A lot of my pride is tied to the Oakland sports scene. As a huge sports fan, and someone that wants to get into the sports business scene, I hope to return to Oakland after college. After working two summers for the Oakland A's, and interning in their Membership Services department, I've set myself up to potentially return full time come May when I graduate from USC. While my pursuit of a career in sports doesn't exactly mimic that of my parents, both of my parents have spent most, if not all, of their professional careers in the business world. A lot of my decision to become a business major has to do with my parents. My own expectations for myself, however, have been created by no one other than me. While my parents have tried to persuade me towards certain careers (such as real estate), they been fully supportive of what I want to do, which has allowed me to create my own expectations.

My Mom has always been someone I've looked up to as a model in life. Whether it's her job or just in her part time gig as a parent, she's been someone who has lived life with a lot of happiness, passion, and especially responsibilities (mostly as a parent). She's taught me a lot about how I should be as an adult and how to overcome challenges.

When I think about the animal world, I've always loved sea turtles. Now that I think about it, I've sort of realized why. Besides being an animal that mostly lives in the water, which I certainly am not, sea turtles always end up going back to the location they were born at. This relates to me a lot since after college I want to return back home, and have always envisioned living in the Bay Area as an adult. When it comes to the plant world, I've had a connection to eucalyptus trees. My house had two huge (and when I say huge I'm talking over 200 feet) eucalyptus trees in my front yard. I always had been amazed by their size and how they stood there was such a big presence.

  1. I think your breakdown of the sea turtle's life was really interesting, and I can see why you find them so relatable. I never knew the turtles always return to the same location. It kind of makes you think how these animals keep track of these locations--since they obviously don't have navigation or any other way of identifying a spot. It's also really great that you get to work in an area which gives you a lot of pride. Congrats!

  2. It's impressive that you've maintained such a close connection to your hometown even after so much time at school, and your clear path and strong ambition to work with your local team will make such a big difference in your overall happiness after graduation. It's also commendable that you stuck with it even when your parents were trying to show you other career paths!

  4. I love that you have such a strong connection to your home town! I feel the same way and consider myself to be blessed that I enjoy both living in LA and having a wonderful place to come home to. It's also sweet that you have such a close connection with your mom and that you appreciate all that she does for you and the family. Side note: Real Estate is awesome, I agree with your parents :)) -Natasha
