World We Imagine Part 1

I often think about how to make the world a better place. Every time I drive through poor neighborhoods where I see homeless people in make-shift tents I think how lucky I am. I also think about how much I have. And then how there are those making millions every year that spend their earnings on fancy cars and yachts, and still have excess money. It blows my mind how we have enough resources to feed and house almost everyone in the world, yet there are so many people still hungry and homeless. Even more shocking is how much food we actually waste every year.

If I could begin to make the world I better place, I'd make sure that no one goes hungry. Food is the most basic necessity of life. I would create farms that specifically focus on feeding those who can't afford to feed themselves or their families. There would be specific distribution channels that gave the food to those in need. Additionally, I would focus on giving adequate housing to the homeless. Recently in Oakland the city decided to place hundreds of sheds in homeless campsites to help give better living spaces to people living on the streets. Not only does this help give "homes" to the homeless, but also helps clean up areas under freeways and overpasses.

A world where more people have the most basic necessities is indubitably a better world. Now I understand that it isn't as easy as it sounds. Food can't just be farmed and handed over, nor can housing just instantly be created. But if those who live lavish lifestyles and in the upper 1% just gave a little to this effort I believe we'd see dramatic change. The more people we get to help, the better off the world will be. Change isn't easy in any way, but given what we have available on this planet there's few things that are impossible.

  1. World hunger has always and may forever be an issue, however, the distribution of food can definitely improve. Using channels like amazon and other localized outlets can significantly increase efficiency and quantity of food being distributed. Teaming up with local farmers around major cities and having partnerships with charities could be the way to helping world hunger around first and even second world countries. The problem is obviously third world countries that don't have roads or systems in place to deliver and organize a large-scale distribution. For this, I have no answer, but we might be able to brainstorm something as a group.

  2. It's a sad reality that our world is more than capable of taking care of everyone's basic needs , yet so many people go hungry and live every day without having their physiological needs met. I really like the idea of farms that are specifically designed to provide food for those in need, but there is also so much that can be done with the existing food system. So much food goes to waste simply because it is slightly visually defective or it doesn't meet the insanely high standards we have set in our grocery stores. Programs like Imperfect Produce are taking steps to mitigate this unnecessary food waste, but they commercialize the process (they sell it off to consumers for a lower price but still make their own profit on the transaction). I think you could get a lot of support both from the government and individual donors to set up a program that makes the food go directly to those in need.

  3. I agree with what you're saying about having the rich give a small amount to the poor. After all, that what most presidential candidates are preaching. This, in the short run, will solve many problems regarding homelessness and hunger, but these ultra millionaires won't be so quick to give up their money. I know that everything costs money and it has to come from somewhere, so maybe a potential governmental intervention can help in the form of a tax. This money can pay for resources to help out those who need it. Also, I do agree with the food distribution plan. This will be tough to implement since you would have to teach people what to do and fund the operation at the beginning, but it a great idea and I think that it will have a big impact.

  4. I completely agree with you. Food is probably the most important thing to a human being, and I personally could not imagine going hungry for days. There are way too many people in our country that go to bed hungry every night and we need to come together to find a solution this problem. Housing is also another issue that we need to sort out. Especially in Los Angeles, we see a very large homeless population. Lastly, I don't think there needs to by a major plan to help feed everyone. Even just having a small little organization that donates food is contributing to helping the issue go away. Little things have the potential for huge chain reactions.
